Research methodology

How a program gets onto this site, how awards and subjects are classified, and how the selections are built.

From discovery to publication

  1. Discover. Searches across the matrix of 23 subjects, the BFA / MFA / PhD awards and the launch destinations (plus every US state and Washington, DC), in English and local languages; institutional catalogs; national education registers; accreditation directories; art-school associations. Progress through this matrix is recorded; a completed search that found nothing is recorded as “no verified offering found” and never becomes an invented program. Rankings, Wikipedia and third-party directories are used for discovery only and never verify a fact. A search engine may omit programs, so a missing result is never read as a closure and a quiet search is never read as completeness.
  2. Check the program is current. We look for active admissions, current curriculum and delivery, a current tuition year, and any renaming, suspension or replacement. Archived PDFs can support history but not current availability.
  3. Record facts with sources. Every non-empty fact stores the official page and a short verbatim quote. A script re-fetches the page and looks for the quote; a fact whose quote cannot be found is withheld or downgraded. Pages that block automated readers are skipped and listed, never bypassed.
  4. Keep levels apart. Institution, campus and program are separate records. Accreditation, language, fees and duration belong to the program and campus.
  5. Review and date. Each record shows when it was last checked. Stale records are flagged for re-checking.

What counts as an art program

Earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in the 23 subjects: Fine Arts, Studio Arts, Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, Printmaking, Ceramics, Jewelry and Metalsmithing, Textile Design, Graphic Design, Visual Communication Design, Illustration, Fashion Design, Interior Design, Industrial Design, Photography, Film and Video Production, Animation, Game Art and Design, Digital Arts, New Media Arts, Art History and Art Education. Certificates, short courses, bootcamps, honorary awards and degrees that merely contain one art module (business, computing, architecture or humanities degrees) are excluded.

Awards and subject links

The official award title is stored as published, together with an award family derived from it by a fixed rule: BFA, MFA and PhD are used only for a Bachelor or Master of Fine Art(s) and a Doctor of Philosophy. A BA (Hons) stays a BA, an MA stays an MA, a BDes stays a BDes, and a DPhil, Dr. phil. or Doctor of Fine Arts is listed under its own title. Professional doctorates are kept apart from PhDs. Exact BFA and MFA filters therefore return those actual awards.

A program has one canonical record and belongs to a subject only through an explicit link: a dedicated degree (the title is in that subject), a named major, an official concentration or a documented pathway. Concentrations and pathways are shown only with the verbatim sentence from the official page, and we state whether applicants apply to the pathway or choose it after enrolment. A general MFA with one painting elective is not listed under Painting, and we never create a separate degree for a concentration. A faculty member’s research interests never create a subject-specific PhD.

Delivery and study intensity

Full-time and part-time are study intensity. On campus, hybrid, fully online and low residency are delivery arrangements, stored separately. A program is online only when all academic work and assessment are remote; low residency means required periods on site, and we record how often, how long, where, the travel expectations and any extra costs. Applying or submitting a portfolio online does not make a program online, and one remote module does not make a degree online.

Recognition, accreditation and validation

We separate institutional accreditation, degree-awarding authority, program accreditation, professional-body validation and national qualification registers. Each record names the authority, the exact program and campus, the standing (full, candidate, conditional), the dates and the source. Candidate status is never shown as full accreditation. Bodies such as NASAD, CIDA, regional accreditors, national quality agencies and qualification registers have different roles; we check each body’s actual role and do not treat their listings as interchangeable. Records are marked verified only when the authority’s own listing or document was read.

Tuition and costs

The original currency is authoritative. We do not convert currencies, rank by price, or compare annual tuition with whole-program tuition. Each price keeps its year, billing basis and the student category the page names; nationality alone does not decide which fee applies. Studio fees, materials, fabrication, printing, software, equipment, compulsory travel, residencies, compulsory exhibition charges and application charges are recorded separately where published. A program total is shown only when a source states it or when annual tuition and a single published duration support a clearly labelled calculation.

Editorial selections

The best-school pages are unranked editorial selections, not league tables. Each states what was considered, its criteria (verified award and subject link, curriculum, studio and critique structure, facilities, recognition, tuition, funding and admissions transparency, student support, research environment, documented outcomes where comparable), its sources, its limitations and its review date. BFA, MFA and research-degree selections are kept separate. We do not claim to have visited campuses, tested courses or surveyed employers. A university-wide ranking is never presented as a ranking of its art program, and external rankings are cited only by publisher, subject and edition. Sponsorship has no influence on selection.

What we do not do

  • We do not invent institutions, programs, accreditation, facilities, partnerships, faculty biographies, tuition, scholarships, outcomes, rankings or reviews.
  • We do not imply that any degree guarantees admission, funding, a visa, a job or teacher registration, and we do not claim that a portfolio will be accepted.
  • We do not copy third-party directories or ranking tables, or use imagery we are not licensed to use. Student artworks, films and designs are reproduced only with established rights; linking to an official showcase does not authorise copying its contents.

Corrections and updates

Fees, deadlines and programs change. Past dates are shown as past and never rolled forward. See report a correction and the sponsorship disclosure. Coverage and open gaps by destination are on the destinations page.
